DIGITAL PHASE CONVERTERS

Proprietary software with a powerful microprocessor runs our Phase Perfect digital phase converter through the control of solid state power switching components.  The digital signal processor (DSP) continually adjusts the converter’s input and output modules during the phase conversion process.  As a result, balanced 3 phase power is always maintained.

The third voltage is generated by the process of double-IGBT conversion.  Double conversion is the conversion of AC power to DC and back to AC.  Insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) switch the power in this process.

The input module (rectifier), consists of IGBTs in series with an inductor, operating at a switching frequency of 10,000 Hz.  Controlled by software in the digital signal processor to draw current from the single-phase line in a sinusoidal fashion, the input module charges capacitors on a constant voltage DC bus.  With an incoming sinusoidal current, there are no significant harmonics generated back onto the line.  The electronic power factor correction on the input module increases the efficiency of digital phase converters, and makes for a utility-friendly converter.

The output module (inverter) is made up of IGBTs drawing on the power of the DC bus to create an AC voltage.  This resulting voltage is not sinusoidal, but rather a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) waveform very high in harmonic content.  An inductor/capacitor filter system receives this PWM voltage and produces a sine-wave voltage with less than 3% total harmonic distortion (standards for computer grade power allow up to 5% THD).  The digital signal processor's software continually monitors and adjusts this generated voltage to produce a balanced 3 phase output at all times.  In the event of utility over-voltage, under-voltage, or a fault, the digital signal processor will shut the converter down.  A Phase Perfect digital phase converter can safely operate virtually any type of 3 phase equipment or any number of multiple loads.
